Simulating heat and CO2 fluxes in Beijing using SUEWS V2020b: Sensitivity to vegetation phenology and maximum conductanceParameter source

Where: Table 3, LAI parameters for the base case and the LAI and gs_LAI cases, p. 4559

Gives w1,GDD = -1.42, w2,GDD = 0.00258, w1,SDD = 2.0 and w2,SDD = 0.0001 for the LAI and gs_LAI cases, against 0.04, 0.001, -1.5 and 0.0015 for the base case, and states that all vegetation types share one set within a case.

Where: Appendix A, Workflow of LAI parameters optimization, p. 4566

Derives the coefficients by CMA-ES from a 2011-2016 Landsat 7 ETM+ LAI series for a park near the IAP tower.

Where: Conclusion, p. 4566

Describes the optimised LAI parameters as site-specific.

Where: Sect. 4.5.1, model cases, p. 4558

Defines the LAI and gs_LAI cases in which the optimised parameters are used.

Simulating heat and CO2 fluxes in Beijing using SUEWS V2020b: Sensitivity to vegetation phenology and maximum conductanceLater compilation

Where: ModelRuns/Input/SUEWS_Veg.txt, code 993, columns LAIEq, LeafGrowthPower1, LeafGrowthPower2, LeafOffPower1, LeafOffPower2

Carries 0, -1.42, 0.00258, 2 and 0.0001 for this surface.

Where: ModelRuns/Input/SUEWS_SiteSelect.txt, Beijing grid 1 (2015 and 2016)

Assigns Code_EveTr 991, Code_DecTr 992, Code_Grass 993 and IrrigationCode 5 to the modelled Beijing grid, so those rows are the ones the published runs used.

The released input independently contradicts the stored senescence_sdd, so the discrepancy is not a typesetting artefact in the article.

Simulating heat and CO2 fluxes in Beijing using SUEWS V2020b: Sensitivity to vegetation phenology and maximum conductanceLater compilation

Where: Sect. 3, Study site and measurements, p. 4554

The model domain is a 1 km circle around the IAP tower, covering roughly 80 % of the accumulated flux footprint; no city-wide domain is modelled.

Assessment findings

Namesupported
Table 3 states that every vegetation type uses the same LAI parameters within one case, and the archived Veg code 993 carries LAIEq 0, which is what the LaiEq = 0 part of the name records.
Targetsupported
Veg code 993 is the grass row of the modelled Beijing grid.
Valuessupported
All four coefficients now match the source exactly. Table 3 gives w1,GDD = -1.42, w2,GDD = 0.00258, w1,SDD = 2.0 and w2,SDD = 0.0001 for the LAI and gs_LAI cases, and the archived Veg row carries LeafOffPower2 = 0.0001. The stored senescence_sdd was 0.001, which matched neither that case nor the base case, and was corrected against both the article and the released model input.
Sourcesupported
Zheng et al. is the parameter publication for the optimised coefficients: Appendix A sets out the CMA-ES workflow and Table 3 publishes the result.
Placesupported
The LAI series and the modelling domain are both in Beijing.
Representativenesssupported
Site representativeness matches the fit to a six-year Landsat LAI series for one park near the IAP tower and the 1 km model domain; the paper explicitly describes the LAI parameters as site-specific.
Methodsupported
Appendix A describes a covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy fit of the LAI sub-model to the interpolated satellite LAI series.
Identitysupported
This record holds the same four coefficients as its two sibling records, which is what the source prescribes rather than an accidental duplication: Table 3 states that all vegetation types use the same LAI parameters within one case, and the archived Veg rows 991, 992 and 993 repeat them.

Scientific note

The optimised LAI coefficients are genuinely Zheng et al.'s own: Appendix A sets out the CMA-ES fit and Table 3 publishes the result, so the source attribution and the method are sound. The stored senescence_sdd was previously corrected to the published 0.0001. Because the fit uses one park's satellite LAI series and a 1 km domain and the paper calls the parameters site-specific, this grass record is now classified at site scale. The identical deciduous and evergreen sibling tuples are intentional; their representativeness is tracked separately in issues 325 and 324.
