Simulating heat and CO2 fluxes in Beijing using SUEWS V2020b: Sensitivity to vegetation phenology and maximum conductanceParameter source

Where: Table 4, gmax for the gs and gs_LAI cases, p. 4559

Publishes gmax = 1.4 mm s-1 for the evergreen tree.

Where: Table E1, evergreen tree column and note b, p. 4573

Lists one evergreen species, Pinus tabuliformis, at 1.4 mm s-1, and states that the figure was obtained by dividing maximum canopy conductance by G1 (= 3.5).

Where: Appendix E, Maximum conductance of urban green space in Beijing, p. 4573

Reports weighted or simple species averages for the deciduous tree and grass only, and ties the Beijing-wide claim to that averaging.

Simulating heat and CO2 fluxes in Beijing using SUEWS V2020b: Sensitivity to vegetation phenology and maximum conductanceLater compilation

Where: ModelRuns/Input/SUEWS_Veg.txt, code 991, columns MaxConductance

Carries 1.4 for the evergreen surface.

Where: ModelRuns/Input/SUEWS_SiteSelect.txt, Beijing grid 1 (2015 and 2016)

Assigns Code_EveTr 991, Code_DecTr 992, Code_Grass 993 and IrrigationCode 5 to the modelled Beijing grid, so those rows are the ones the published runs used.

Assessment findings

Namesupported
Table E1 tabulates the evergreen tree under its own heading.
Targetsupported
Table 4 and the archived MaxConductance column attach 1.4 to the evergreen surface.
Valuessupported
Table 4 gives 1.4 mm s-1 for the gs and gs_LAI cases and Table E1 gives the same figure for Pinus tabuliformis; the archived Veg code 991 carries 1.4.
Sourcesupported
Zheng et al. is the publication in which the stored value appears.
Placesupported
Pinus tabuliformis is tabulated as a Beijing species in Table E1.
Representativenesssupported
Site representativeness matches the one-species Pinus tabuliformis value, which Table E1 rescales by G1. Appendix E makes its city-wide claim for averages over different species, while archive code 991 shows only that this site-scale evidence was applied to the Beijing model grid.
Methodsupported
A published species conductance rescaled by G1, so literature rather than a measurement or fit by Zheng et al.
Identitysupported
Distinct row in Table 4 and distinct Veg code in the archive.

Scientific note

The stored value is exactly what Zheng et al. publish and exactly what their released runs used, so the number, source, place, origin and legacy lineage remain unchanged. Appendix E says the city-wide purpose is achieved by averaging different species; only the deciduous and grass entries are such averages. The evergreen entry is one Pinus tabuliformis value, converted by G1, so its evidence reach is site. Code 991's assignment to the Beijing grid documents model application, not a broader observation reach.
