Development of the Surface Urban Energy and Water Balance Scheme (SUEWS) for cold climate citiesParameter source

Where: Sect. 3.1.1, Model optimization — Snow properties, p. 1698

States that the minimum and maximum snow albedo were determined by optimization using observations at the suburban Montreal site.

Where: Sect. 3.1.1 and Fig. 4, optimized albedo bounds, p. 1699

Reports snow_albedo_min 0.18 and snow_albedo_max 0.85 after comparing the observations with the earlier ageing function. Figure 4 compares the new model curve with observed medians from four locations at the suburban Montreal site from January 2008 to April 2009.

Where: Table 4b, overall area parameter values, p. 1701

Gives alpha_s,min 0.18, alpha_s,max 0.85, epsilon_s 0.99, a0 0.1, a1 9.9 x 10^3 as printed, a2 0.0102, GDD 300, SDD -450, TBaseGDD 5 degC, TBaseSDD 10 degC, TBaseQF 18.2 degC, Ks 0.0005 mm s-1, a_r 0.0016 mm W-1 h-1 and T_lim 2.2 degC, among others. It is a single set for the whole area.

Where: Table 1, characteristics of the observational sites, p. 1696

Table 1 locates the suburban Montreal site Pr at 45.501 N, 73.811 W. Section 2.2.2 identifies it as a single-family residential area in the Pierrefonds–Roxboro borough, and Section 2.3 says its snow density and albedo observations were used for model development.

Assessment findings

Namesupported
Snow matches the record's snow target.
Targetsupported
Minimum and maximum snow albedo are snow properties.
Valuessupported
Sect. 3.1 states that from the observations the minimum and maximum snow albedo are set to 0.18 and 0.85, and Table 4b lists alpha_s,min 0.18 and alpha_s,max 0.85. Both stored values are published.
Sourcesupported
The article determines these values itself and says so, contrasting them with Lemonsu et al. (2010), so it is the parameter publication.
Placesupported
The record declares montreal-suburban. Section 2.2.2 identifies Pr as the suburban Montreal site in the Pierrefonds–Roxboro borough, Table 1 locates it at 45.501 N, 73.811 W, and Figure 4 shows that its snow observations determine these values. The stable path and origin retain the legacy Helsinki migration text; Helsinki is where the values were later checked and applied.
Representativenesssupported
Site representativeness matches a determination from observations at the single Pr suburban site. The four locations in Figure 4 are surface types measured within that site, not four cities or a city-wide sample.
Applicable Scalesupported
Section 3.1.1 averages the observed surface types to match the simulation scale, and Table 4(b) lists the pair as overall-area parameters. Neighborhood is therefore the supported spatial unit.
Methodsupported
Section 3.1.1 explicitly places the parameters under Model optimization and states that the minimum and maximum snow albedo were determined by optimization using observations at the suburban Montreal site. This is a fitted parameter set, not a direct measurement record.
Identitysupported
One snow albedo record, holding the pair Table 4b publishes.

Scientific note

Both values are the article's own. Section 3.1.1 explicitly says they were determined by optimization using observations, so the record classifies them as fitted rather than measured. Figure 4 and Sections 2.2.2–3.1 locate those observations at the Pr suburban site in Montreal, so the record declares that site and site-scale representativeness. The observed surface types were averaged to the simulation's overall-area scale, recorded as neighborhood applicability. Its stable path and origin remain legacy migration identifiers rather than claims about where the parameters were determined. No value, stable path, name, target, place, representativeness, origin or legacy ID changes.
