typologies — Industrial composite

Urban typesswedenregional

No photograph yet. This kind of neighbourhood is easier to recognise than to describe, and a picture would tell a reader more about “Industrial” than the parameters below can.

Composition

This composite is assembled from the entries below. Each evidence record keeps its own scientific review; a separate composition review assesses why these components were selected and how they are mapped.

Composition provenance

Curation required

Assembled · assessed by provenance-audit · 2026-08-23. Agent assessment is composition review preparation, not human verification.

IndustrySelected component

Fills bldgs. The archetype is named Industry, declares target land_cover.bldgs, place sweden and representativeness regional.

KumpulaSelected component

Fills paved. The archetype is named Kumpula, declares target land_cover.paved, place helsinki and representativeness city.

Assessment findings

Composite identitysupported
The composite is named Industrial, described 'Extensive low warehouse type buildings' and carries profile_type 'Industrial'. The building component is named Industry and declares place sweden, so the label describes the building side of the assembly. The paved component is named Kumpula, the Helsinki neighbourhood that archetypes/typologies/finland--sub-urban describes as sub-urban and mixed, and it describes no industrial surface; that mismatch is a selection question and is taken up under place and representativeness rather than here.
Composite targetsupported
The composite's own target is typology, and each slot takes a component declared for it: the bldgs slot takes an archetype declaring target land_cover.bldgs and the paved slot an archetype declaring target land_cover.paved. No archetype in this database declares attaches_to, which is carried only by the 477 records under records/profiles, so slot fit here is judged on the components' declared target.
Own parameter valuesnot applicable
The composite declares no parameters block of its own, so it asserts no value beyond the two archetypes it selects.
Composition rationalenot applicable
The composite claims no composition source, and the repository records no published rationale for pairing a Swedish building archetype with a Finnish paved one. The components' own selections belong to their composition assessments, not to this review.
Place applicabilitycuration required
The composite claims place sweden. The building component declares place sweden and fits. The paved component, archetypes/surfaces/paved/helsinki--kumpula, declares place helsinki, which db/places.yml resolves to country finland, so half of this Swedish typology is Finnish. Leaving Sweden was not forced: archetypes/surfaces/paved/sweden--asphalt-mixed-city declares place sweden and representativeness regional, and four other Swedish typologies select it. Nor was a thematically exact choice available: none of the seven entries under archetypes/surfaces/paved describes an industrial or warehouse surface. A maintainer therefore has a real choice to record, between a generic Swedish asphalt archetype and the Helsinki neighbourhood archetype now in place. The same substitution recurs in the Swedish set: archetypes/typologies/sweden--sub-urban also takes archetypes/surfaces/paved/helsinki--kumpula and archetypes/typologies/sweden--traditional-stone-house-neighbourhood takes archetypes/surfaces/paved/helsinki--city-centre, so it should be settled across those entries together.
Representativenesscuration required
The composite declares representativeness regional. The building component declares regional and matches. The paved component declares city, so a single city's paved archetype stands in a slot of a composite claiming national reach, and here the narrower class is avoidable: archetypes/surfaces/paved/sweden--asphalt-mixed-city is classed regional and is already used by four Swedish typologies. This is the same decision as the place finding and should be settled with it.
Slot and season mappingsupported
An assembly of two existing archetypes into two slots; the composite produces no value of its own. A typology carries no seasonal or wet/dry axis, because the four OHM positions live inside the surface archetypes, so the only mapping made here is one archetype per slot and each slot receives exactly one.
Completeness and uniquenesssupported
A typology has two component slots and no others: the migration maps the legacy Types table's Buildings and Paved columns into bldgs and paved and nothing else (scripts/migrate_to_records.py), and all fourteen entries under archetypes/typologies fill exactly those two. This composite fills both, so the assembly is complete. Its pair of components is unique: archetypes/surfaces/bldgs/sweden--industry is selected by no other typology, and no other entry pairs it with archetypes/surfaces/paved/helsinki--kumpula, which is otherwise taken by archetypes/typologies/finland--sub-urban and archetypes/typologies/sweden--sub-urban. It is the only industrial typology in the database, so nothing duplicates it.

Scientific note

Sweden's industrial typology is half Swedish. Its building side is archetypes/surfaces/bldgs/sweden--industry, place sweden and representativeness regional, which is what a Swedish national typology should select and is the only industrial building archetype the database holds. Its paved side is archetypes/surfaces/paved/helsinki--kumpula, place helsinki and representativeness city: the paved set of a Finnish neighbourhood standing in a composite that claims Sweden and claims regional reach. That choice was not forced by scarcity. archetypes/surfaces/paved/sweden--asphalt-mixed-city is Swedish, classed regional, and already carries four other Swedish typologies. What was genuinely unavailable is an industrial paved surface, since none of the seven paved archetypes describes one, so whoever assembled this entry had to substitute something and left no record of why the substitution went to Helsinki rather than to the Swedish row. A maintainer can settle that without touching a single value, and should settle it alongside archetypes/typologies/sweden--sub-urban and archetypes/typologies/sweden--traditional-stone-house-neighbourhood, which import Finnish paved archetypes in the same way. Everything else holds: both slots are filled, each takes a component declaring the target that slot needs, and the pair appears in no other entry. The components' own compositions and values remain subject to their own assessments; this review does not revisit them.
